Many years ago, Henry Kissinger was asked by a student at a lecture he gave " I am interested in diplomacy, what shall I major in? Dr. Kissinger replied "history, not political science". Today's western leaders urgently need to study the history of the 1930s. The Imperial Russian leader Vladimir Putin is utilizing a familiar playbook, namely the one written by Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich. Putin fully realizes the weakness and stalling tactics of NATO and is taking full advantage of his opportunity. Ukraine is not his first target nor will it be his last. As I wrote in a previous post, territorial contiguity with Kaliningrad Oblast is his goal. Belarus is already in his pocket. No sanctions, however ineffective, have yet been placed on that satellite of his. Next will be the turn of Lithuania and Poland.
The ancient Czarist and Soviet policy of Russifying their expanding territory with ethnic Russians is alive and well, All former Soviet "republics" contain significant ethnic Russian populations. Just as the Nazis used ethnic Germans as an excuse to seize more territory, e.g. Sudetenland, so Russia will continue to demand more territory.
NATO will need to make a decision. The Spanish Civil War demonstrated that a Non-Intervention Committee will not work. Sending arms and sanctions will change nothing on the ground. Ukraine is at stake, but so is Europe.
Hard decisions need to be made.
