Do the Laws of the United States Mean Anything?

All agree that the immigration laws of the United States are, as a rule,
violated routinely. The President, the Secretary of Homeland Security,
the Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the majority
of the Congress, State officials and various voluntary organizations are all
extending welcome to illegal entrants to the U.S. and working overtime to
find a route to citizenship for these lawbreakers. All may have their stories
which are heartbreaking, yet there are immigration laws which enable legal
entry into this country. The reality is that these laws are not enforced with a
chaotic result in many parts of the country.
This naturally brings up questions as to the observance and enforcement
of other types of laws. Most of us can agree that one should not drive the
wrong way on a one way street and should observe traffic signals, though
in many cities these are now merely considered suggestions. Robbery in
California, for example, is in many regards not considered a crime if less
than $950.00 is stolen. This has resulted in the closing of many stores with
resultant great harm to the communities which they had served. What is
happening? This can only be described as irrational if not insane.
Let’s imagine that a large number of taxpayers suddenly decide not to
observe the federal, state and local tax laws? How long would the
President, the Internal Revenues Service and the states tolerate such a
situation? Would the New York Times and other media of similar
persuasion plead for understanding and amnesty? Sorry, but something
tells me that violators of the tax laws of the United States would quickly
feel the wrath of a furious and vengeful government. Please do not
misunderstand the thrust of this argument. The tax laws should be
scrupulously observed by all taxpayers. Similarly, so should all laws be
observed. This obviously includes the immigration laws.
Members of the legislative and executive branches of government must
remember that they are the servants of the citizens and not its masters,
They have been elected to their positions to support and defend the
Constitution of the United States and its people. If they feel a law is wrong
and needs to be amended then do it. But it is wrong to overlook
enforcement of laws which are currently valid. Some action must be taken.
Inertia cannot become the order of the day or the legal system or our
country faces danger of collapse.
