Memo to the GOP: The Irresistible Urge to Commit Suicide Usually Succeeds

Previous posts on this blog have discussed the Dobbs case, the unintended consequences of the premature leak of Justice Alito’s opinion and a warning to Democrats and Republicans about skating on thin ice. It’s time for the Republicans to understand what the purpose of politics and elections in a free society are all about. As Vince Lombardi told the Green Bay Packers “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing”. The purpose of a political party is to win elections, not to prove a point and lose elections. Losing proves nothing except rigidity and stupidity. It’s time for the Republican Party to realize that there is one issue in the upcoming mid-term election this November. That is inflation!

President Joe Biden just doesn’t get it. Massive budget deficits, multi-trillion dollar spending programs, increasing interest rates add up to a once in a generation opportunity for the GOP. Harping on abortion is not a winning issue. Historically, the Republican Party has stood for freedom. What does it stand for now? Being right in their own eyes? This is absurd. If you are against abortion, then don’t have one. If your child needs one, don’t let her have one, but don’t tell responsible adults what to do in their private lives. This is an issue that is decided. The Supreme0 Court’s ruling in Dobbs will change nothing and is about as valid as was the Prohibition Amendment to the Constitution. It was repealed after the “great experiment” abysmally failed. The same goes for abortion regulation and legislation. The GOP had better stop its foolishness at once or America will truly face a major problem, that is, one party rule in Washington. A democratic majority in both houses of the Congress will leave no brakes on the Biden movement to bankrupt the country. All early elections have demonstrated clearly where the public stands on abortion. It is settled regardless of what the SCOTUS justices may say. Move on and debate what is truly important this November.

Understand that every trip to the supermarket or gas station is felt in the consumer’s purse as family budgets are stressed to the breaking point. Understand that rising interest rates put home ownership beyond the reach of millions of potential homeowners. Understand that too many good jobs have been permanently exported from the United States along with demands by China for technology transfer that American companies are much too willing to agree to and weaken us permanently. This is what we are worried about. Massive deficits will increase as interest rates rise and debt service on the out-of-control national debt explodes. Wake up before it’s too late.
