May 7, 1940 was one of the darkest days of World War II for the British Empire. A motion of no confidence had been introduced against the Government led by Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in the House of Commons. The debate was officially entitled “Conduct of the War” but was more popularly known as the Norway Debate or the Narvik Debate. Late that night, Leo Amery, a Conservative MP made the following unforgettable quote in his speech, which effectively put an end to the Chamberlain government. Chamberlain, despite winning the vote in parliament resigned on May 10 and was succeeded by Winston Churchill.
“Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go.”
One of the most memorable words from a great speech. Worthy of thought by all.
